(Animated Battle Map)
This is part one of a planned two-part video covering Operation MI. As you can see I spent a considerable amount of time covering Nagumo’s Dilemma. To me it’s one of most striking examples of how tough it can be for a commander to make a decision based on the information at hand. I found that to be the most interesting aspect of the battle.

Corrections:
“Strength” , “Auxiliary”, and “unknown” are misspelled in the video.
At 22:55 I should have stated “North of Midway” instead of Northeast of Midway. The illustration shows a 10 degree 240 nm from midway location. Not so Northeast as I audibly stated.
At 23:43 I should have stated 79 aircraft instead of 78 and I should have displayed 35 instead of 34 torpedo bombers. the “mistake” came about because sources still differ on whether there were 27 or 26 Carrier attack planes (Kates). If it was 27 it would have been 79 Planes. if it was 26 it would have been 78. During the recording I somehow mixed up the numbers.
Additional Notes:
notice that the carriers started off the battle in a box formation. This provided further mutual support for their rather weak AA fire. however, due to the incessant air attacks from VT-8, VT-6 and VT-3, the carriers were never able to reform in a box formation, instead they were in a ragged line which further worsened their AA capabilities.
—————————————–Spoiler Below regarding Nagumo’s Dilemma———————————————
So what was the answer to Nagumo’s Dilemma?
“Taking all together, and admittedly operating with the benefit of hindsight, the “right” answer to Nagumo’s conundrum probably should have emphasized maneuver, offensive speed in preference to mass, and passive damage control. With fifteen minutes in which to act, he didn’t really have time to implement anything terribly fancy. But he could have helped himself immensely by immediately spotting every strike airplane in his hangars, whether they were armed or not, and launching them at the Americans. The sixty-four armed aircraft he had in had were perfectly capable of doing enormous damage to his enemy. And by emptying his hangars, he removed the single greatest danger to his carriers — the presence of fueled and armed aircraft within them.”

The Americans were incredibly lucky.
27:35 Since the possible carrier force was believed to be too far away to launch, I would have continued with the rearmament of the reserve planes and launched a strike on Midway finishing off the main objective. When Tomonaga's Airgroup returned, arm them up with torpedoes and send them to investigate the enemy force to the North East.
Feel free to criticize this plan. I know very little about Naval and Air strategy and want to learn more.
I'd appreciate the feedback..
For anyone who wanted an update on where part 2 is. He posted an update on the making of part 2 on the youtube community tab a month ago. He said he was 85% done so it should be out pretty soon! You guys should go check it out!
Good video, please, do more.
Worst cliff hanger ever!
As an alumnus of the U.S. Naval War College (NWC) War Gaming Department, I can state this is very well done and could easily be used in wargaming and strategy & tactics instruction. One interesting side note, we were told that in pre-war U.S. Navy vs. Japan wargaming that took place using ship icons on the ground floor of NWC SIMS Hall, Navy pilots assigned reconnaisance duties would be given a brief opportunity to observe opposing force laydowns by pulling the 2nd floor game floor curtain back for a very short visual "snapshot" from which they had to compose a report!
Where the f**k is part two? 😉
I never thought a bunch of MS Paint animated planes and boats will keep me on the edge of the seat for 40 minutes
part 222222222222222222222222222222222!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Part 2 ?? i think he forgot his login password combo, cheers though pt1 awesome !! great work
Any Japanese committed seppuku due to some of the mistakes?
Just attack!!! doesn´t matter the losses. The US can easily replace any carrier lost. So it doens't really matter.
is Part 2 still coming?
It's been over a year since he posted this, his most recent video. I'm beginning to believe that he's deserted us, or something tragic has happened to him. Oh, I hope not!
In the open ocean, were not the torpedo bombers always a waste?
40:52– ALL HELL BROKE LOOSE!!!!!
27:33– Option 2
After watching the number of American planes and the crews with them get shot down in almost suicidal attacks, I wonder if we have that level of bravery in today's military? Not only were they almost sure of getting killed, they knew it! But because of their actions, the battle was won! My God! My heart went out to all of them. I am an old Marine fighter pilot and was lucky to not have to fly old obsolete crates as these poor Marines did. I was a second lieutenant flying a brand new F4! My mind raced as I watched this video and reeled with the thought of what I could have done to help them if I could have been there with my fabulous plane! Our country does not remember what these fine men did to save our country. Without their sacrifice, the Pacific battle would have been lost.
The Battle of Midway from the Japanese perspective:
"we got our asses handed to us."
With all these documented chain-reaction destructions, now the trench run doesn't seem so far fetched…
Best documentary I’ve seen in a while.
Loved it!!! If you have time to do part 2 it would be great!
Stopped watching at the30 sec mark when he ssys the us had not shown any sings of surrendering. ???? Wtf
