I think it is dedicated to all those people who lost their dear ones… in the MV she wants to transfer her memories with her dear friends because she is suffering and looks almost like a dead person (rough lips, dark fingernails), but as soon as she transfered her memories, she gets much better and isn't lifeless anymore. But now that she lost her memories, she wants to regain them … any person who lost their previous memories wants to regain them; thus it is an infinite loop of forgetting and remembering … (that's also one of the reason why this song is called "eight", since you can flip it horizontally, so it becomes an infinite-symbol)
It is about moving on, even though it is painful. But deep inside you have precious memories with your friends, familiy; whatever person you've loved so dear, but isn't here anymore. Over time, you might be able to handle those memories and be able to think that "it was great that they were with me and shared those precious times with me".
What I meant to say with this … IU doesn't need to express her sadness with writing a song. We all know that how painful it is to lose someone (or at least imagine that pain). I rather think that she wanted to deliver the message I've mentioned above to the audience, not to say explicitely that she misses her friends. Please be careful with mentioning people's names who passed away and give them proper respect.
Fun facts/Easter eggs: The MV is 3:41 long, and when you add up the numbers, it becomes eight. The song itself is 2:48 long; if you multiply 2 with 4, it becomes eight. Sugar and IU are both 28 years old; adding their ages -> 56 -> May 6th (the release date of the song).
